Mightyena (Japaneseグラエナ Graena) is a Dark-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Poochyena starting at level 18.

Biology

Mightyena is a quadrupedal Pokémon that is based on a hyena. Its fur is mostly short and gray, but there is shaggy black fur on its lower legs, tail, and in two thick strips starting behind its eyes and running the length of its body. It has dark, triangular streak patterns below its eyes, which are red with yellow sclerae. Its ears are rhombus-shaped with dark insides, its nose is red, and it has gray paw pads.

Mightyena lives in a pack in the wild. As a member of this pack follows the orders of its leader and chases down prey. It gives obvious signals when it is about to attack, as it starts to growl deeply and flattens its body. Mightyena defeats foes with perfectly coordinated teamwork. If its Trainer is very experienced, it will always obey their orders. As depicted in the anime, Mightyena is prone to licking the faces of the people it's fond of. This species lives in grasslands and savannas.

Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Poochyena and Mightyena

Mightyena shares some similarities with both wolves and hyenas. The design may have been influenced by domestic breeds like the German Shepherd and the Australian Kelpie, a breed with personalities that are heavily influenced by their owners. German Shepherds are also commonly colored black and gray. Its appearance may also be based on a brown hyena. Mightyena's Shiny form, as well as the fact that it is a pack animal, is reminiscent of a spotted hyena.

Name origin

Mightyena may be a combination of mighty and hyena.

Graena may be a combination of growl and hyena.

Dialga (Japaneseディアルガ Dialga) is a dual-type Steel/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Dialga is the game mascot appearing on the boxart of Pokémon Diamond and its remake Pokémon Brilliant Diamond.

Along with Palkia and Giratina, it is a member of the guardian trio of Sinnoh, representing guards.

Biology

Dialga is a dark-blue, sauropod-like Pokémon with some gray metallic portions, such as its chest plate, which has a diamond in the center. It also has various light blue stripes. It has a fin-like structure on its back and a crest on its head, resembling a dinosaur. Dialga also has two horns on top of its head, two fang-like horns around its mouth, and three spines on the back of its neck. It has three claws on each foot of the same metallic looks as its chest plate. Faint cracks exist across its body. The wing-like structure on its back can be used to focus the flow of air, as seen in Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky.

Dialga can warp between places speeding up speed. It can also travel through air to visit the different regions. As Dialga primarily resides in a different region, its behavior is nearly impossible to study. It has been shown to be very protective of its home. It also tends to have violent conflicts with its counterpart Palkia. Dialga has been referred to a big creature in Sinnoh stories. It is the only known Pokémon that can learn Roar of Time.

Major appearances

Dialga (movie)

Dialga made its physical debut in The Rise of Darkrai, where it fought with Palkia and Darkrai in a battle that nearly destroyed Alamos Town. It then briefly reappeared in Giratina and the Sky Warrior. During its trip back to its own region, Dialga ended up in the Reverse World and got attacked by Giratina, who had been angered by Dialga and Palkia's fight in the previous movie.

In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Dialga was shown for the first time with both the other members of its trio. After being called by Sheena to stop a spatial distortion, it briefly fought with Giratina once more. Later, it returned to help Palkia and Giratina fight Arceus. After being injured, it sent Sheena, Ash, and his friends back in time to fix Arceus's betrayal.

Primal Dialga

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - Beyond Time & Darkness, Primal Dialga was the protector of the Time Gears.

Other

In The Battle Finale of Legend!, Dialga and Palkia were summoned by Cyrus on the Spear Pillar. They were put under his control through the use of the Red Chain and were tasked by him to open a portal to another region, wanting a region of his own. After the Red Chain's destruction and Cyrus's exit, Dialga and Palkia rampaged, causing a danger for Sinnoh. However, the two were calmed down and sent away with the help of the lake guardians.

In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Dialga was one of six Legendary Pokémon summoned and hypnotized by the shadow Hoopa Unbound as its reinforcements. It and its teammates engaged in a battle against the LatiosLatias, and Shiny Rayquaza summoned to protect the real Hoopa in Dahara City. Eventually, after the shadow Hoopa was sealed in a Prison Bottle, the hypnosis on Dialga and the other Legendary Pokémon was lifted, and Dialga departed for its home.

Diamond & Pearl chapter

Dialga first appeared in Creeping Away from Cradily. Dialga, along with Palkia, was summoned by Cyrus in order to rebuild a new region. Cyrus used the Red Chains to force Dialga and Palkia to fight each other in order to destroy the region and compose a storm that would swallow the existing region. DiamondPearl and Platinum worked together with their Pokémon to free Dialga and Palkia from their controlled states.

Later on, an accident with handling Charon's machine caused Dialga, Palkia and Cyrus to be dragged into the fight before it ended completely.

Platinum chapter

It was revealed that Giratina imprisoned both Dialga and Palkia in the Distortion region before setting off into the current region to wreak havoc. Soon, Cyrus and Diamond met in the Distortion region, and agreed to free Dialga and Palkia using their Pokémon. Dialga and Palkia later resumed their struggle against Giratina in the Distortion region. When Charon decided to escape from the Distortion region on Giratina, Diamond got on Dialga and chased after him. Giratina was eventually defeated, with Dialga and Palkia forcing it back into the Distortion regionfor good before both returned to the Spear Pillar.

HeartGold & SoulSilver chapter

Dialga was tamed in the Sinjoh Ruins, along with Palkia and Giratina, by Arceus's taming process, which was forced by Team Rocket's Four Generals. Knowing that the taming process would threaten the Johto region, Team Rocket's true leader Giovanni returned with Lance and Pryce to keep the taming trio at bay while Gold tried to calm Arceus down. Dialga was kept at bay by Pryce and his Swinub. Once Arceus was eventually becalmed, Dialga and Palkia departed from Johto and were spotted by Cynthia.

Dialga on the Spear Pillar

Dialga appears as a stage Pokémon along with PalkiaCresselia, and the lake guardians on the stage Spear Pillar. It affects the stage much differently than that of its counterpart, such as slowing down time, and even going off its post to attack the players in the middle. It can also distort the stage, like Palkia, but only slightly and not as extreme, as well as shoot beams from various locations.

Trivia

  • In games prior to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Dialga has a catch rate of 30.
  • Dialga has the highest base Special Attack stat of all Steel-type Pokémon.
  • The spikes on Dialga's back, at a certain point of view, look similar to a Time Gear. In the anime, when Dialga uses Roar of Time, the spine extends and the five spikes become thinner and more pronounced.
  • Although Dialga is genderless in the core series games, it is referred to as a male in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness.
  • Dialga is the only Legendary Pokémon to have a role in four different movies.
  • According to Junichi Masuda's blog, the Spanish translation team suggested changing the name Dialga because of its similarity to the word alga, seaweed.

Origin

Dialga, along with Palkia, may be based on the Shinto fake history of Izanami and Izanagi, who is said to have build one island, erected a pillar on it, and from there build the islands of Japan. Appearance-wise, Dialga seems to be based on short-necked sauropod dinosaurs such as Camarasaurus or Brachytrachelopan. Its type is Steel possibly due to the hardness of diamonds, the fact that metal is known to last long periods of time, or the fact that most parts of a clock are made of metal, such as the gears. It may also be because diamonds are compressed carbon, and steel is an alloy from iron and carbon. Metaphorically, it could be a reference to the rigid and unaltering pattern of passing time, as metals are known for their resilience against physical forces. Its turquoise pattern on its body is vaguely reminiscent of clock hands, where the ends of the "clock hands" are diamond-shaped.

Name origin

Dialga is derived from diamond. Ga may be a corruption of gon from dragon or from the asteroid Dalgarno. It may also involve día (Spanish for day, referring to a unit of time) or dial (as in sundial, an instrument used to tell time using shadows on a clock face).

Zekrom (Japaneseゼクロム Zekrom) is a dual-type Dragon/Electric Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Zekrom is the game mascot of Pokémon White.

Along with Reshiram and Kyurem, it is a member of the Tao trio, which exists in the legends of the Unova Region.

Zekrom fuses with Kyurem using the DNA Splicers to become Black Kyurem.

Biology

Zekrom in Overdrive mode

Zekrom is a black, bipedal Pokémon resembling a dragon or dinosaur, with dark patches on various portions of its body. It has red sclerae, white irises, and black pupils, as well as a small horn-like protrusion on the tip of its snout. Its head sports a thundercloud-like crest tipped with light-blue coloration. There are six pairs of pointed teeth visible when its mouth is open, two in the upper jaw and four in the lower. At the base of its neck is a black, stud-like feature, and atop its shoulders are similar, larger features resembling armor padding. The bases of its wings also have such padding, and a fanned, splayed, seemingly webbed shape with a small "wing-spike" on one edge. The lower length of Zekrom's arms extenuate into splayed, seemingly webbed, somewhat baseball-mitt-like formations, with three-clawed, dark-colored hands on the undersides. The front portion of Zekrom's waist is black-colored, with its belly and thighs having thin striations down their length. Its knees are black, as are the foremost parts of its three-clawed feet and spiked heels. When its emotions surge, it enters Overdrive mode and its tail lights up with a blue light.

Zekrom's tail consists of large, round, conical and spiked formation, likened to an electricity generator, with a black inner portion and bands on the tip of the outside portion. This tail produces energy for its attacks and emits an anti-gravity field, allowing Zekrom to fly through the air with minimal effects from aerodynamic resistance and gravity. It can cause several thunderstorms in one area, and it normally hides in thunderclouds. In an Unovan fake story about the twin heroes, Zekrom sided with the younger brother who sought ideals. According to one fake story, Zekrom uses its lightning to annihilate kingdoms of people who have lost the righteousness in their hearts. It is a genderless species. It is the only Pokémon that can learn Bolt Strike, though it is commonly associated with the move Fusion Bolt.

Zekrom in Pokémon Battle Chess
  • In games prior to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Zekrom has a catch rate of 45. This is likely due to it being a required capture during the storyline of Pokémon Black and White.
  • Zekrom was first revealed simultaneously alongside Reshiram on both the official English and Japanese Pokémon websites on May 28, 2010. This makes them the first two Pokémon simultaneously revealed worldwide.
  • On May 31, 2010, two weeks prior to the official revelation of Zekrom's typeShōko Nakagawa spoke about her love of Electric-type Pokémon on her blog and mentioned that because of that, she wanted to get a Zekrom. This statement was then quickly removed.
  • Zekrom's Attack and Defense, and Special Attack and Special Defense are the reverse of Reshiram's.
  • Zekrom has the highest base Attack and base stat total of all Electric-type Pokémon.
  • Zekrom is the heaviest Pokémon introduced in Generation V and the heaviest Electric-type Pokémon.
  • Zekrom, as well as Reshiram, made an appearance alongside Pikachu and a Poké Ball in 2010's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
  • Zekrom is Ken Sugimori's favorite Pokémon from Pokémon Black and White.[1]
  • In the Generation V games, Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem use different variations of the same battle theme. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, however, Zekrom's version (featuring electric sound effects) is used for all three Pokémon.
  • Zekrom appears in Pokémon Battle Chess BW Version. Alongside Reshiram, the player must lose a specific number of pieces (three in Zekrom's case) to use it, and it takes four spaces on the board.

Origin

Zekrom and its counterpart Reshiram are based on the concept of yin and yang in Taoism, directly referenced by Zekrom's Japanese species: the Black Yin Pokémon. According to Ken Sugimori, Zekrom was designed to have a tougher and more masculine design to contrast to Reshiram's light, airy, feminine design. While the black design matches Zekrom's yin species names (yin being characterized by dark), its masculine design contrasts with yin (yin being characterized as feminine). Zekrom's tail, the center point of its design, is based on an electric turbine.[2] Additionally, Zekrom has a more mechanical, man-made appearance, which contrasts with Reshiram's organic appearance.

Appearance-wise, it somewhat resembles a mid-sized to large theropod dinosaur, such as Allosaurus or Tyrannosaurus, and a European dragon. The crest on its head seems to be based on a thundercloud. The fake story about how Zekrom and Reshiram came about, regarding two brothers infighting. There is also some resemblance to the Zoroastrian fake belief of two equally powerful creatures, one representing light and truth, and the other representing lies and darkness.

Name origin

Zekrom is derived from 黒 kuro (black). Ken Sugimori has also stated that Ze was used because it was a harder, stronger sound than Reshiram's Re, and Zekrom is a "powerful, strong character."[3]
