Crobat (Japaneseクロバット Crobat) is a dual-type Poison/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Golbat when leveled up with high friendship. It is the final form of Zubat.

Biology

Crobat is a purple, bat-like Pokémon with a small, round body. It has long, pointed ears, yellow eyes with red pupils, and a small mouth that usually has its teeth bared. On its body are two pairs of wings: an upper pair that is slightly larger and a lower pair that developed from its legs. Both pairs have green-blue membranes, but the lower pair's membranes are only visible from the back. The upper wings have two claw-like fingers near the middle. On the bottom of its body are what appear to be a pair of stubby feet or tufts of fur.

Crobat is capable of flying long distances by alternating between its two sets of wings. The extra set of wings has also improved its flight speed without sacrificing its ability to fly silently. It can also travel through cramped caves without ever slowing. The combination of silent flight and sharp fangs allows it to bite down on prey without being noticed and drain their blood. If unable to consume blood, it becomes lethargic and unable to fly. Due to its lack of legs, it is clumsy on the ground and only able to crawl around with its wings. Crobat is rarely found in the wild, though they are typically found in caves or on tree branches, where it hangs upside-down by its rear wings.

Trophy information

A Bat Pokémon that evolves from Golbat, Crobat's hind legs have evolved into a second pair of wings, which allows it to fly at great speeds but limits its ability to rest. The affection a Golbat has for its Trainer is vital for the evolution process: if a novice Trainer has a Crobat, it shows that he or she cares for Pokémon well.

Ruby If this Pokémon is flying by fluttering only a pair of wings on either the forelegs or hind legs, it's proof that Crobat has been flying a long distance. It switches the wings it uses if it is tired.
Sapphire Crobat sneaks up on its intended prey using wings that barely make a sound. This Pokémon rests by hanging on a tree branch with its rear legs that serve as wings.
Emerald Over the course of evolution, its hind legs turned into wings. By alternately resting its front and rear wings, it can fly all day without having to stop.
FireRed The development of wings on its legs enables it to fly fast but also makes it tough to stop and rest.
LeafGreen It flies so silently through the dark on its four wings that it may not be noticed even when nearby.

Sun Both its legs became wings, and as a result, it can't move well on the ground. All it can do is crawl around.
Moon Silent and swift in its four-winged flight, it bites down on its prey before they realize what's happening. In a heartbeat, it drains their blood.
Ultra Sun Its fangs are so sharp, if it bites you in the dark and sucks your blood, you won't notice any pain or realize you've been bitten.
Ultra Moon It feeds on the blood of living people and Pokémon. If it can't drink any blood for even a short while, it becomes weak and unable to fly.

Sword Both of its legs have turned into wings. Without a sound, Crobat flies swiftly toward its prey and sinks its fangs into the nape of its target's neck.
Shield This Pokémon flaps its four wings skillfully. Crobat can fly through cramped caves without needing to slow down.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Crobat and its pre-evolved forms.
  • Crobat and its pre-evolved forms share their category with Woobat. They are all known as the Bat Pokémon.
  • Crobat's color scheme is the reverse of Golbat's. This also applies to its Shiny variation.
  • Crobat's evolutionary family has several similarities with Swoobat's. All of the members of both lines are based on bats and reach their respective final evolved form by friendship.
  • Crobat can be seen as a parallel to Noivern. Both are Flying-type Pokémon based on bats that have Infiltrator as a possible Ability. They have the same base stat total and the same base HPDefense, and Special Defense stats.
  • Although Crobat's Pokédex entries imply that its only pair of hindlegs have developed into wings, Crobat is sometimes depicted with an additional pair of tiny legs/feet.
  • Crobat and its previous evolutionary forms are the only Pokémon (other than Mew) that are capable of learning Brave Bird whose designs aren't at least partially inspired by birds.

Origin

Crobat seems to be based on a bat, particularly vampire bats, which bite other animals to feed on their blood. It may also be inspired by mythological vampires. Its extra set of wings may be based on the fact that a bat's front legs and hindlegs are connected by their patagium, essentially incorporating all of their limbs into their wings. Its very high Speed stat may be based on the Mexican free-tailed bat, which purportedly has the fastest horizontal flight speed of any animal. Its Poison-type may be inspired by either the anticoagulant properties of vampire bat saliva or the fact that bats are infamous for spreading deadly diseases such as rabies.

Name origin

Crobat may be a combination of cross (referring to the shape of its four outstretched wings) and bat. It may also be a shortening of acrobat (referring to its agility in the air).
