Typhlosion (Japaneseバクフーン Bakphoon) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Quilava starting at level 36. It is the final form of Cyndaquil.

Biology

Typhlosion is a Pokémon with a bulky, yet long and agile body. It is classified as a quadruped, but it is capable of bipedal movement. Most of its body is cream-colored, but its back and the top of its head are a dark green-blue. It has a short, rounded snout and small, triangular eyes and ears. When its mouth is open, its sharp canine teeth and thick tongue are visible. Each of its paws has three digits and there is a coarse, spiky fringe of fur along its rear. Across the back of its neck, there are several red spots that can produce fire. Typhlosion is capable of making anything go up in flames when angered and composing explosions by rubbing its fur together. The heat it generates when ready for battle composes a shimmering haze that can also be used to hide itself. Though it is rare in the wild, it can be found living on grasslands.

Gold's Quilava, nicknamed Exbo, evolved into a Typhlosion in Lively Lugia III to protect SilverCrystal, and himself from Lugia. Afterwards, his larger size allowed him to be a method of faster travel (akin to Crystal's Arcanine), and with his increased power allowed Gold to hold his own and even overpower the Masked Man.

A Typhlosion appeared in Old Ultima Puts Them to the Test, under the ownership of Ultima. It was first seen displaying its Blaze Ability alongside her Meganium with its Overgrow. However, this act damaged much of the surrounding landscape, as well as a large girth of the ship nearby, earning the old woman much ire.

A Typhlosion appeared in Out-Odding Oddish, under the ownership of a Pokéathlon participant.

Trivia

  • Typhlosion and Charizard, along with their respective evolutionary lines, have exactly the same base stats in the same distribution.
    • Infernape and Delphox also share the same base stat total, though their individual stats differ.
  • Typhlosion and Togetic are the only Pokémon officially introduced in Generation II not to appear in the anime until the next generation.
  • Typhlosion shares its category with Quilava and Entei. They are all known as the Volcano Pokémon.
    • Additionally, they are all capable of learning Eruption.

Origin

Typhlosion is mainly based on the honey badger. It may also be reminiscent of weasels and wolverines. It has a long and agile body, like weasels, though it is significantly larger and thicker than its pre-evolved forms.

Name origin

Typhlosion is a combination of typhoon and explosion. Its name is also similar to the word typhus, a Greek word meaning 'hazy' (which would describe the effect that the intense heat Typhlosion generates has on the air surrounding it), and it may also be related to tephra (volcanic material). It could also derive from Typhon, a monster in Greek fake history who fathered many other monsters with his wife, EchidnaCyndaquil resembles an echidna. Alternatively, it could be a reference to Eulipotyphla, the mammal group containing shrews and hedgehogs.

Bakphoon is a combination of 爆風 bakufū (blast) and typhoon.

Serperior (Japaneseジャローダ Jalorda) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Servine starting at level 36. It is the final form of Snivy.

Biology

Serperior is a primarily pale green, serpentine Pokémon. Its face and throat are white, while its back is dark green. Curled, mint-colored patterns extend into the white portion of its face, and it has narrow red eyes. In the lower jaw, two fangs are visible when its mouth is open. There are two pointed yellow extensions on the back of its head. Coiled, dark green extensions spread out from the sides of its lower neck, forming a curving pattern lower down the body. Just below its neck, it has two small leaf-like hands coming out of either side. It has curved yellow markings around its middle and several palmate leaves on its tail. Serperior will only attack with full force against opponents that are unfazed by its piercing glare. It is capable of amplifying solar energy with its body.

Trivia

Serperior in Pokémon Battle Chess
  • Serperior, Samurott, and Emboar all share the same base stat total of 528.
  • Serperior is the only starter and Generation V Pokémon with a serpentine body.
  • Serperior appears in Pokémon Battle Chess BW Version. It acts as a rook piece in chess.

Origin

Serperior is based on multiple species of snakes and limbless lizards, such as Oxybelis fulgidusAhaetulla nasuta, and Ahaetulla prasina (species of vine snakes), as well as the emerald tree boaball python, and possibly Burton's legless lizard. The shape of its head and the extensions on its collar may be based on the bird of paradise or false bird of paradise flowers, a cobra's hood, or a snake's shed skin. Serperior may also originate from Quetzalcoatl, a green, feathered serpent creature. Its body markings resemble the acanthus leaf motifs popularized during the Renaissance.

Ken Sugimori has said that Snivy, Servine, and Serperior are based on French royalty, specifically mentioning Lady Oscar from the anime The Rose of Versailles as an inspiration.[1] The fact that Serperior amplifies sunlight in its body, as stated in its Pokédex entry, may be an allusion to King Louis XIV of France, who famously referred to himself as the "Sun King". Its white face also alludes to the skin whitening fashion, mostly used by the European aristocracy in the 17th century. The dark green design on its chest seems to form a fleur-de-lis, a French insignia that is used on many European noble families' and nations' coat of arms. Along with its regal look, Serperior's ability to seize opponents with its piercing stare is a reference to the basilisk, the king of serpents in European legend.

Name origin

Serperior is a combination of serpent and superior. It may also be a combination of serpent and warrior or emperor.

Jalorda is a combination of 蛇 ja (snake) and lord.

Greninja (Japaneseゲッコウガ Gekkouga) is a dual-type Water/Dark Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

It evolves from Frogadier starting at level 36. It is the final form of Froakie.

With the Battle Bond Ability, Greninja can transform into a special form known as Ash-Greninja. Greninja with the Ability Battle Bond cannot breed.

Biology

Greninja is a bipedal, frog-like Pokémon. It is mostly dark blue with a yellow chest, a white triangular marking over each eye, a light blue four-pointed star on each thigh, and yellow on the lower half of its face. It has red eyes with white pupils and its mouth is hidden behind a large, pink tongue that wraps around its neck and extends outward behind its head. Running down the middle of its head is a fin-like extension, and there is a similar fin on each side of its head. Light blue webbing connects its head fins. There is a large, white bubble-like bump on each elbow and knee. Its back feet have two toes, while its front feet have three toes. Each digit has a bulbous tip and yellow webbing.

Greninja moves with the speed and grace of a ninja. It uses swift movements to confuse its enemies while it slices them up with weapons made of compressed water, most commonly in the form of throwing stars. These throwing stars are sharp enough to split metal. In the past, Water Shuriken and Mat Block were its signature moves.

Through a transformation called Bond PhenomenonAsh's Greninja in the anime and any Greninja with the Ability Battle Bond in Generation VII can change into an alternate form called Ash-Greninja. In this form, Greninja's skin turns a lighter shade of blue, while its face gains red stripes and its cheeks and side fins turn black, changing shape to resemble Ash's hair. Its legs are stronger in this form, and it gains the ability to form large Water Shurikens on its back.

Trivia

  • Greninja has the highest base Speed stat of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.
    • Ash-Greninja has the highest base Speed stat of all Dark-type Pokémon.
  • Greninja is the only starter Pokémon that has more than two possible Abilities, and the only starter Pokémon with an event-exclusive Ability.
  • Ash-Greninja has the highest base stat total of all fully evolved starter Pokémon.
  • Greninja shares its category with Ninjask. They are both known as the Ninja Pokémon.
  • Greninja won first place in the Japanese Pokémon general election 720 (Japanese: ポケモン総選挙720) poll to decide what Pokémon would be distributed at showings of Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel in Japan.
  • It was revealed that Greninja was added into Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U before Pokémon X and Y was even released. Masahiro Sakurai knew that a Generation VI Pokémon was going to be a playable fighter in that game, so when Greninja was decided, all they had to go on in terms of design was concept art, similar to Roy during the development of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
  • During the Pokémon of the Year event held by the Pokémon Company International and Google in February 2020, Greninja won first place with 140,559 votes and beat Lucario at second place (102,259 votes) and Mimikyu at third (99,077 votes).

Origin

Greninja's overall appearance is based on a frog, and it may have been inspired by horned frogs from the genera Megophrys and Ceratophrys due to the spiked protrusions above its eyes. Its color scheme and body shape is similar to that of the splendid leaf frog. The bubble-like protrusions on its body may be based on a toad's parotoid glands, possibly referencing the traditional myth of toads causing warts, though they may also be remnants of Froakie and Frogadier's frubbles.

As its species name implies, Greninja is also based on a ninja. Japanese culture associates frogs and toads with ninjas based on the folk story "The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya" (児雷也豪傑物語 Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari) about a ninja who can shapeshift into a large toad. Greninja and its pre-evolutions may also draw inspiration from the thief or rogue class as they often rely on speed and stealth and are often seen as nimble or ranged combatants while tending to focus more on dodging attacks rather than withstanding damage.

Ash-Greninja's appearance is based on Ash's attire in Pokémon the Series: XY.

Name origin

Greninja is a combination of grenouille (French for frog) and ninja.

Gekkouga is a combination of げこっ geko (croak) and 甲賀流 Kōga-ryū. It may also derive from 月光 gekkō (moonlight), in reference to a popular conception of ninja running through the night or to Greninja's Dark typing, or a combination of both.
