Arcanine (Japaneseウインディ Windie) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.

Biology

Arcanine is a quadrupedal, canine Pokémon with an orange pelt marked by jagged black stripes. It has diamond-shaped ears with beige insides, black eyes, a round, black nose, and two pointed teeth protruding from its upper jaw. Its head, muzzle, and chest are covered in shaggy, beige fur, except for two oval sections around each eye and ear. Long tufts of fur grow behind its elbows and around its ankles. Its underside is black, and it has a billowing, beige tail that is bent in the middle. Each paw has three toes and a round, pink pad.

Arcanine is a fiercely brave and loyal Pokémon. It is capable of running 6,200 miles (10,000 kilometers) in 24 hours with a speed and grace reminiscent of flight. Additionally, the move Extreme Speed was its signature move in the past. Arcanine has long been admired for its beauty and speed, and anyone who hears its bark will grovel before it. The source of its power is a flame blazing wildly inside its body. Being the result of an evolution via Evolution stone, Arcanine is rarely found in the wild, but when found, it is usually seen living in prairies, and Pokémon Snap has also shown it living in active volcanoes. In the anime, it was shown that it stashes food in its mane and carries it to its nest for its young.

Trivia

Engravings of "Legendary Pokémon" MoltresArticunoZapdos, and Arcanine in Pokémon Emergency!
  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Arcanine was originally known as Blaze.
  • Despite the Pokémon category name, Arcanine is not an actual Legendary Pokémon. It is the only Pokémon species to have "Legendary Pokémon" as the Pokémon category.
    • However, Arcanine was seen in an engraving along with Legendary birds MoltresArticuno, and Zapdos in Pokémon Emergency!.
  • Many of Arcanine's Pokédex entries—starting with the one in the Japanese Pokémon Redreference the real world, specifically China.
  • Arcanine and its pre-evolved form are the only Pokémon with a male-female ratio of 3:1 that aren't in the Human-Like Egg Group.

Origin

Arcanine may be based on the Ryukyuan シーサー shisa, or 狛犬 komainu, mythical creatures that resemble a mix between lions and dogs. Statues of them in pairs are used as guardians that invite good characters and repel evil ones. Its stripes and coloration are reminiscent of tigers. It could also be based on the Xiezhi, a mythical fire-eating dog with similarities to lions and tigers. It may also draw inspiration from dogs with brindle ("tiger-striped") coat patterns, such as the 甲斐犬 Kai Ken.

Name origin

Arcanine may be a combination of arcane and canine. It may also derive from arson, given its Fire-typing.

Windie may refer to wind or windy, reflecting its defining nature of being fast like the wind, further emphasized by Extreme Speed being its signature move in Generation II.

Trevenant (Japaneseオーロット Ohrot) is a dual-type Ghost/Grass Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

It evolves from Phantump when traded.

Biology

Trevenant is a ghostly Pokémon resembling a slender brown tree. Its shadowy black body is visible through gaps in the tree, and a single, red eye is visible through a hole near the top. There is a wavy, horn-like branch on either side of its head, both dotted with small, green leaves, and a smaller branch on its forehead. On top of its head is a cluster of green leaves. It has two arms with gnarled branches similar to its horns on the elbows. Around its wrists are cuffs of green leaves and it has three claw-like fingers on each hand. Instead of legs, it has six roots similar to a spider's legs.

Trevenant can control other trees by using its roots as a nervous system. It uses this ability to trap people who harm its forest and will curse people who cut down trees. However, it is very kind to forest-dwelling creatures and Pokémon that reside in its body. Trevenant hates Fire-type Pokémon, so lumberjacks usually bring them to repel it. Along with its pre-evolved form Phantump, Trevenant is the only known Pokémon capable of learning Forest's Curse.

Major appearances

Trevenant made its main series debut in Forging Forest Friendships!, where it kidnapped Ash. It wasn't malicious, though: it only wanted help rescuing its friends Bonsly and Sudowoodo, who had been trapped by Team Rocket.

A Trevenant appeared in Pikachu and the Pokémon Music Squad. It noticed the fight between MeowthChespin, and a Torchic over a Pecha Berry.

Three Trevenant appeared in A Timeless Encounter!, with two of them being normal and the third being a Pokémon nicknamed Elder. Elder kept sneezing after getting a flock of Cutiefly stuck in its leaves. Ash and a young Professor Kukui freed the Cutiefly and used their Torracat and Litten, respectively, to warm up some of the Cutiefly. Afterwards, Elder rewarded Ash with a Firium Z. When Ash returned to the present, Elder was revealed to have passed away. It reappeared in a flashback in Pikachu's Exciting Adventure!.

Minor appearances

Trevenant debuted in Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction.

A Trevenant appeared as an image in A Performance Pop Quiz!.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon have the same Egg Group combination as Trevenant and its pre-evolution.
  • Trevenant and its pre-evolution were designed by James Turner.

Origin

Trevenant is probably based on a kodama (fake thing), the things of trees that sometimes inhabit old-aged trees. Its stripe-like indentation on its body is very similar to shimenawa (fake thing), used to mark living habitation, who are often seen tied around kodama. It is also similar to other types of tree and nature fake things, such as dryads. Trevenant's fierce protection of forests may be a reference to hamadryad, or could perhaps be a nod to the concept of protected important groves. Its single eye may possibly be a reference to cyclopes or the mountain-dwelling yamawarawa (all fake creatures). Its general body shape may have been based on the shape of the kanji 木, meaning wood or tree. Its Shiny coloration is based on the birch tree, known for its gray-and-white bark, with its leaves representing a tree in the autumn.

Name origin

Trevenant is a combination of tree (or possibly treant) and revenant.

Ohrot may be a combination of 大 ō (big) and ロット rot (as in a root rot).
