Scizor (Japaneseハッサム Hassam) is a dual-type Bug/Steel Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Scyther when traded holding a Metal Coat.

Scizor can Mega Evolve into Mega Scizor using the Scizorite.

Biology

Scizor's retracted wings

Scizor is a bipedal, insectoid Pokémon with a red, metallic exoskeleton. It has gray, retractable forewings and hind wings with simple, curved venation. Its head is kite-shaped with three blunt horns extending above its forehead, and dark yellow eyes. Scizor's neck and part of its thorax give the appearance of being exposed: they show black skin and are surrounded by its raised exoskeleton. Scizor has a large abdomen with three black, pointed stripes below the waist; the female has a larger abdomen than the male. Scizor has broad shoulders and thin, segmented arms ending in large, round pincers, which make up a third of Scizor's body weight. Scizor's legs are defined by large hip joints, thin thighs, and wide calves, its feet ending in one clawed toe in front and another in the back.

Mega Scizor's pincers lengthen and develop serrations. The lower half of the claws turn white and gain three-pointed spikes on the underside. The barbs on Mega Scizor's claws can stab through concrete, and opponents caught in them are unable to escape.[1] Its eyespots are now blue with a thin black rim. Though they lack the black rim, its eyes are blue as well. Additional pieces of black armoring appear on various areas of its body: a three-pointed crest on its forehead and striated coverings on its shoulders and thighs. Mega Scizor's legs are less detailed and resemble large, tapered spikes with white tips.

Scizor's body is as hard as steel, with claws strong enough to crush any hard object. They can be opened and closed like jaws, and are patterned with black, eyespots with yellow "pupils". Its muscles are said to be made of metal. It will raise its claws and wave them around to scare off predators or foes, giving it the appearance of having three heads. When it identifies an enemy, Scizor will use its claw to beat up the opponent to the point there is nothing but scrap left afterward. Scizor is incapable of flight, instead quickly flapping its wings to regulate its body temperature. It does this to prevent its body from becoming too hot and melting. It has tremendous power despite its slim body. Scizor is rarely found in the wild, though it can be found in grasslands.

While Mega Scizor is formidable, it cannot maintain this form for extended periods of time; after too long, its body starts to melt and it loses the strength to wield its heavy pincers. The reason is due to it being overflown with excess energy from its Mega Evolution, unable to properly regulate its body temperature. Mega Scizor uses its pincers to rip anything it grabs to shreds. It prefers to beat up the opponents instead of grasping them.

Other appearances

Scizor in Pokkén Tournament

Super Smash Bros. Melee

When released from a Poké Ball, Scizor will charge forward while flailing its claws, then leap high into the air and fall off the screen. Its attack pattern is similar to Marill.

Trophy information

This evolved form of Scyther has arms ending in large pincers with distinctive eye-spot markings. It's unable to fly very far with its wings, but it can affect its body temperature by flapping them at high speeds. Its sleek look has made Scizor quite popular among collectors.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Scizor makes a cameo appearance in the Kalos Pokémon League. When the stage transitions to the Ironworks Chamber, it can be seen in the background along with SteelixKlinklang, and Honedge.

Trophy information

NA: Is that a three-headed monster?! No, wait... the left and right heads are actually claws! Creepy. Most creatures that have face-like patterns use them defensively to give themselves a chance to flee. Scizor throws that idea away and uses them to scare foes while it attacks!

PAL: It may look like this Pokémon has three heads, but that's just what it wants you to think. Look closer and you'll see that two of them are actually claws. Most creatures with face-like markings use them to scare predators to give themselves a chance to run away, but Scizor seems more likely to attack while its foe is stunned!

Pokkén Tournament DX

Scizor is a playable character in the arcade and Nintendo Switch versions of Pokkén Tournament.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Scizor in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Scizor returns as a Poké Ball item as it did in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It retains its movement and actions from prior games, using Metal Claw to fly at and slash opponents in its way with great speed. It then jumps off the screen. It also appears as a Spirit.

Trivia

  • Scizor shares its category with Kingler. They are both known as the Pincer Pokémon (though Scizor was known as the Scissors Pokémon in Generation II and has been called the Scissor Pokémon in the anime).
  • Despite having different base stats, Scizor and its pre-evolved form both have a base stat total of 500. In turn, Scizor is the only Pokémon to not have its base stat total changed upon evolving. Scyther is faster, whereas Scizor has higher attack and defense.
  • Mega Scizor is tied with Mega Pinsir, Mega Heracross, and Genesect for the highest base stat total of all Bug-type Pokémon.
  • Scizor can be seen as a parallel to Steelix. They both have pre-evolved forms from Generation I, and both evolve via trading with a Metal Coat in which both change a typing to the Steel type. Both Pokémon also gain a Mega Evolution in Generation VI.

Origin

Scizor shares characteristics with flying red ants and mantises. It also shares characteristics with wasp-mimicking mantidflies.

Name origin

Scizor is a corruption of scissor or a combination of scissors and razor.

Hassam is a corruption of 剪む hasamu (to clip or snip).

Avalugg (Japaneseクレベース Crebase) is an Ice-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VI.

It evolves from Bergmite starting at level 37.

Biology

Avalugg is a massive Pokémon covered almost entirely in semi-transparent ice. Through the ice on its head, diamond-shaped, yellow eyes with purple sclerae are visible. Its head is wedge-shaped with a white diamond-shaped ice chunk on each side in place of ears, a dark chink in the ice over each eye, a crack just before the tip of its snout, and a beard of short icicles. The top of Avalugg's body is flat with three horizontal cracks along the surface and there is a collection of icicles along its belly. Its legs are cylindrical with cracks just before its foot and in-between its toes; underneath each toe is a spiked claw.

Avalugg's massive body is hard as steel. This allows it to crush anything in its way. It has been known to allow Bergmite to huddle on top of its back, which causes it to resemble an aircraft carrier. Avalugg's bulk makes it the heaviest Ice-type.

It reappeared in A Real Icebreaker!, where it was used in a rematch, during which Avalugg was able to defeat Pikachu but then lost to Talonflame.

Trivia

  • Avalugg has the highest base Defense stat of all Ice-type Pokémon.
  • Avalugg shares its category with Regice. They are both known as the Iceberg Pokémon.
  • Avalugg is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 514.
  • As of Generation VIII, Avalugg and Bergmite are the only Pokémon that are in the Monster and Mineral egg groups.

Origin

Avalugg appears to be based on a tabular iceberg or a stalactite. It may be a representation of the submerged part of the iceberg, which is immense in comparison with the tip. Its body also resembles an aetosaur, or possibly a tortoise.

Avalugg's Ice type and being likened to an aircraft carrier may be a reference to Project Habakkuk, a plan conceived by the Allies in World War II to build an aircraft carrier from pykrete, a combination of ice and wood pulp. The cracks in its body deepen in daytime heat and heal throughout the night, which is likely a reference to the polar ice caps shrinking in the summer and expanding in the winter.

Name origin

Avalugg may be a combination of avalanche and lug (to carry or drag heavy objects, or a big/clumsy person).

Crebase may be a combination of crevasse and base.

Celesteela (Japaneseテッカグヤ Tekkaguya) is a dual-type Steel/Flying Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is one of the Ultra Beasts and is known by the code name UB-04 Blaster (Japanese: UB04 Blaster).

Biology

Celesteela is a large, vaguely humanoid Ultra Beast with a bodily construction that resembles a cross between a space shuttle and a bamboo shoot. It has a small, white head with a tiny mouth and a skinny neck with three segments. On top of its head is a gray structure resembling a hat with long, flowing hair underneath. The hair reaches midway down its body and is rimmed with bright blue. The "hat" has two small blue dots and four white spikes arranged in an X-shape. These spikes resemble decorative hair sticks. On the very top of its hat is a long gray horn similar to a drill bit. It has large, disembodied gray arms that resemble bamboo stalks. At the end of each arm is a ring of bright blue, fin-like projections and a collection of eight smaller, black bamboo shoots. Each smaller stalk has a bright blue ring with a small line extending back up the stalk.

Its main body is conical and resembles a dress with four overlapping layers. The shortest and outermost layer is the shortest and appears metallic, while the inner layers are each a lighter shade of green, progressively longer, and seem to be cloth or plant material. Underneath all the layers is a white body with a light gray crisscross pattern covering it and a bright blue ring along the base. Below the dress is what appears to be a collection of eight black bamboo stalks. On the bottom of each stalk is a bright blue ring with a small line extending back up the stalk; this causes the stalks to also resemble solid rocket boosters. Celesteela is one of the heaviest Pokémon, tying with Cosmoem.

According to Wicke from the Aether Foundation, its most distinctive feature is the energy that it stores within itself: a flammable gas that it can shoot from its two huge arms. This is mostly used to propel itself in flight and for battle, but it is thought to have sufficient power and lift to even fly into space. Celesteela's rocket thrust is powerful enough to destroy an entire bamboo forest. Despite being Steel-type, Celesteela's body is plantlike and can absorb nutrients from the soil. As seen in the anime, Celesteela can have a long lifespan, as one was buried in Alola for over 200 years.

Major appearances

Celesteela (anime)

Celesteela debuted in Rise and Shine, Starship!, where Sophocles found it buried alive while camping at Bamboo Hill and believed it to be The Celestial Starship (Japanese 星舟かぐや Starship Kaguya), a figure from a folktale. He and his classmates decided to dig it out of the ground, and although the Ultra Guardians failed to catch it due to the fact that it was rooted down, it eventually flew off back into space. Unlike the other Ultra Beasts in the anime so far, this Celesteela had been growing in Alola for more than 200 years.

Celesteela physically debuted in A Raid and Po Town. It was one of the Ultra Beasts used by Guzma to attack the invading Trial Captains and Hau at Po Town before later escaping to cause havoc on the rest of Ula'ula Island. It reappeared from Confusion and Monsters from Another World to The Truth and Island Kahuna Hapu, as well as Play the Melody That Echoes in the place.

Multiple Celesteela appeared in Summon the Emissaries of the Moon and the Sun.

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Celesteela has a catch rate of 25 and a base experience yield of 114.
  • Celesteela is tied with Cosmoem as the heaviest Pokémon.

Origin

Celesteela is likely based on Princess Kaguya from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter: its body resembles bamboo shoots, its arms resemble cut bamboo trunks, and overall it resembles a mixture of elements of a space shuttle and a depiction of Princess Kaguya as a woman with long hair wearing a multilayered kimono. Its body may also incorporate similarities to the spacecraft SELENE (nicknamed "Kaguya" in Japan), which orbited the Moon between 2007 and 2009. The combination of bamboo and spacecraft elements may also reference bamboo rockets.

Name origin

Celesteela may be a combination of celestialsteel, and stella (Latin and Italian for star).

Tekkaguya may be a combination of 鉄火 tekka (gunfire), 鉄鋼 tekkō (steel), and かぐや姫 Kaguya-hime (Princess Kaguya).
