Giratina (Japaneseギラティナ Giratina) is a dual-type Ghost/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

While it is not known to evolve to or from any other Pokémon, Giratina has a second forme activated by giving Giratina a Griseous Orb to hold, or while it is in its home, the Distortion Region. Its original forme, Altered Forme, will then become Origin Forme.

Giratina's Origin Forme was officially revealed in early February 2008.

Giratina is the game mascot of Pokémon Platinum, appearing on the boxart in its Origin Forme.

Along with Dialga and Palkia, it is a member of the taming trio of Sinnoh, representing antimatter.

Biology

Giratina is a large, gray, draconic Pokémon with three gold half-rings on each side of its long neck. Its head has a gold crown-like object surrounding it with two large horns pointing sideways. A thick black stripe runs vertically along its front with five red horizontal stripes. In its Altered Forme, it has two large black ghostly wings with three red tips on each that can resemble claws. These wings can change shape as if made of a liquid or gas. Its six legs are thick and have golden claws. Two golden half-circles similar to those on its neck are on each side of each leg, resembling shackles. It has a tail. Giratina remains in Altered Forme when outside of its home region.

In its Origin Forme, it takes on a serpentine look. Its legs are reduced to golden-tipped spikes, and four additional golden spikes appear near the edge of its tail. While in Origin Forme, the six gold half-rings can grip objects. The back points of each half-ring have a black ghostly tendril with red a spike at its tip. The horns on its head are now facing the back. The sides of the golden "crown" cover its mouth and separate vertically like an insect's mandible when it opens its mouth. The black vertical stripe is broken into pieces and runs all the way down its body. Giratina can only be in its Origin Forme when in its home, the Distortion region, or when holding a Griseous Orb.

Giratina is able to travel through and control regions. When in its Origin Forme, it is able to pass through regions at will, however, it will turn back to its Altered Forme due to the gravity change from the Distortion region. Giratina is a highly aggressive and territorial Pokémon that is protective of its home. Legends claim that Giratina appears in cemeteries. Giratina has also been reported to appear in ancient cemeteries. Giratina was said to be banished for its supposedly violent behavior, though in the anime it is shown to possess a gentle side as well. Giratina is said to have observed the main region silently while in its own home region. Giratina is the only known Pokémon that can learn Shadow Force.

Major appearances

Giratina (movie)

Giratina debuted in Giratina and the Sky Warrior, where it sought revenge against Dialga for the damage it caused to its home, the Reverse region, during its battle with Palkia in The Rise of DarkraiZero later attempted to copy Giratina's powers so he could conquer the Reverse region. Throughout the movie, Giratina would take on its Origin Forme whenever it is in the Reverse region, and its Altered Forme whenever it is in the real world.

In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, Giratina was shown for the first time with both the other members of its trio. It resumed its attack on Dialga, but was finally calmed down through the intervention of Ash and Sheena. It later joined forces with Dialga and Palkia to fight Arceus.

Other

In Hoopa and the Clash of Ages, Giratina was one of six Legendary Pokémon summoned and hypnotized by the shadow Hoopa Unbound as its reinforcements. It and its teammates engaged in a battle against the LatiosLatias, and Shiny Rayquaza summoned to protect the real Hoopa in Dahara City. Eventually, after the shadow Hoopa was sealed in a Prison Bottle, the hypnosis on Giratina and the other Legendary Pokémon was lifted, and Giratina departed for its home. It appeared in both of its formes.

Trivia

Origin Forme Giratina in the Distortion Region in Pokémon Platinum

Altered Forme Giratina at Turnback Cave in Pokémon Platinum
  • Origin Forme Giratina is the tallest Generation IV Pokémon.
  • Giratina has many differences from the other members of its trio:
    • It is the only member with form differences.
    • It is the only member without any double resistances.
    • Its HP is its highest stat rather than Special Attack.
    • It does not have a timespace orb in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (the Griseous Orb is introduced in Pokémon Platinum).
    • It is met at level 70 in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl while the other members are met at level 47. This is reversed in Pokémon Platinum.
    • It is separated from the other members of its group in the Pokédex by Heatran and Regigigas.
    • It is the only member without a 100% recruit rate in the Mystery Dungeon series.
  • Giratina is tied with LunalaDawn Wings Necrozma, and Shadow Rider Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
    • Giratina is tied with Drifblim for the highest base HP stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, Giratina is the only Pokémon to come out from above the screen during the start of the battle.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, when battled in the Distortion Region it does not have a shadow until it uses Shadow Force or breaks out of a Poké Ball.
  • Giratina is the only Legendary Pokémon that can be obtained in all five of the Generation IV core series handheld games.
  • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the second frame of Giratina's Altered Forme sprite was changed, but the static sprite remained the same.
    • This sprite is also present in Pokémon Platinum's data but is unused.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, when encountered in the Distortion Region the unique message "The Distortion Region's Giratina appeared" is displayed. However, it is still a wild Pokémon.
  • In Black 2 and White 2, in the The Battle Between Legendary PokémonFantina has an Origin Forme Giratina without a Griseous Orb.
  • Altered Forme Giratina is the heaviest Ghost-type Pokémon.
    • Origin Forme Giratina is the tallest Ghost-type Pokémon.

Origin

Furthermore, both of Giratina's Forms resemble the Beasts of Revelation, with its Altered Form standing for the "Earth Beast", and its Origin Form standing for the "Sea Beast".

Giratina may also be based on Seta, a giant centipede, from the Japanese fake fairy-tale, "My Lord Bag of Rice", which was said to prey on dragon hatchlings and be as large as a mountain.

In its Altered Forme, Giratina's wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-like, six-legged feature, but its posture is similar to a sauropod.

Its Origin Forme has a body similar to the a serpentine body (due to saraph meaning snake or serpent in Islamic languages). Additionally, "Seraphim" alternatively translates to "[the] burning one", which could have been one of the inspirations for Giratina's destructive nature. The exact design of its six wings may be based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs. This Forme also shares physical traits with the Amphiptere, a European dragon-like creature with wings but no legs.

ts Ghost-type may have been chosen to represent this, being the type of metaphysical and "otherworldly" substances and beings. Additionally, it parallels its counterparts' types; Dialga is part Steel-type, and Palkia is part Water-type - all three reference the three primary states of matter; solid, liquid, and gas.

Name origin

Giratina may be a combination of girasol (a type of red opal), guillotine, or girare (Italian for to wander/turn around); and platina and プラチナ purachina (Japanese for platinum).

Lycanroc (Japaneseルガルガン Lugarugan) is a Rock-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Rockruff starting at level 25. The form it evolves into depends on the time.

  • Rockruff evolves into Midday Form Lycanroc when leveled up during the day (in Generation VII, in Pokémon Sun and Ultra Sun only).
  • Rockruff evolves into Midnight Form Lycanroc when leveled up at night (in Generation VII, in Pokémon Moon and Ultra Moon only).
  • A Rockruff with Own Tempo evolves into Dusk Form Lycanroc when leveled up from 7 PM to 7:59 PM in real-time (Generation VIII) or 5 PM to 5:59 PM in in-game time (Pokémon Ultra Sun and Moon, equating to 5 PM to 5:59 PM in real-time for Ultra Sun and 5 AM to 5:59 AM in real-time for Ultra Moon).

Biology

Lycanroc is a canine Pokémon resembling a wolf. It has three possible forms: Midday Form, Midnight Form, and Dusk Form. The first two forms are influenced by Solgaleo and Lunala when bathed in solar or lunar energy. The third form is said to have been influenced by the setting sun of the evening.

In its Midday Form, Lycanroc resembles a quadrupedal, light brown wolf. It has a white underbelly that extends up around its muzzle and eyes in a mask-like marking. It has pointed ears with dark brown tips and pink insides, big blue eyes, and a triangular, dark brown nose. There are four sharp fangs in its mouth: two in the upper jaw and two in the lower. Large tufts of brown fur extend from the sides of its head; three tufts on each side. A bushy, white mane covers its neck. Four dark brown rocks poke out of its mane, composing a shape similar to a stylized sun. The rocks are said to be razor-sharp. The lower portions of this form's legs are white, and each foot has three dark brown claws. It also has a long, fluffy white tail.

In its Midnight Form, Lycanroc instead resembles a slouched, bipedal wolf or werewolf. It has short red fur with white on its lower legs and a white streak that covers its face, underbelly, and tail. It has pointed, button ears with black tips, three large tufts of fur on each side of its face, a triangular black nose, and a mouth full of sharp teeth. While the sclerae, irises, and pupils of its eye are visible, they all glow a pinkish red and no distinctive colors are visible. A mane of fur covers its back and shoulders, sweeping forward over its head to form a crescent moon shape. On either side of its body, just below the shoulders, two small rocks resembling claws poke out of the mane. A single, bigger stone projects out of the front of the mane over its head. Each of this form's paws has three black claws, and it has a stubby tail covered in long fur.

In its Dusk Form, Lycranroc resembles a combination of its Midday and Midnight Forms. The body is similar to Midday Form with the same white color except with orange-gold fur. It retains the three brown claws for all four feet. The white fluffy mane resembles a sun with part of the crescent moon. It also has four rocks around its neck like a sun as well along with a single, bigger stone coming from the mane over its head. The face resembles Midday Form but is orange-gold with bright green eyes, the eyes can change to bright glowing red when angry or attacking.

The Midday Form has a calm and cautious personality. In order to avoid needless fighting, the Midday Form prefers to live alone and does not form a pack with others of its kind. However, it is a fiercely loyal partner to Trainers that accept it during its unruly stage. In battle, it darts past opponents while attacking them with the rocks in its mane. These swift movements leave many foes bewildered and backed into a corner.[1] It always aims for the foes' weak spot using its fangs. Broken fragments of its stone mane are considered good luck.

In contrast, Lycanroc's Midnight Form is thrilled by battling and becomes more excited the stronger its opponent. This excitement is what causes its eyes to glow. [2] The Midnight Form is known to be reckless. Its strategy consists of closing in on its opponent and encouraging attack, then countering with a powerful blow that knocks out its opponent. The full force of its headbutts can destroy giant boulders. Trainers that can draw out its power earn its trust, but it despises those that it disagrees with or who try to force it to fight.

The Dusk Form Lycanroc shares traits from the previous two forms. Its stance, calm demeanor, and loyal nature are shared with the Midday Form. However, it also shares the Midnight Form's fighting spirit, including the red, glowing eyes at the moment of attack. Due to only evolving at sunset, the Dusk Form is considered the rarest of the three forms. [3] The Dusk Form of Lycanroc is rather difficult to train due to its temperamental nature.

Accelerock is the signature move of Lycanroc's Midday and Dusk Forms, but all three are able to use the exclusive Z-MoveSplintered Stormshards.

Trivia

  • The QR Code displayed in the Pokédex entry for Dusk Form Lycanroc is actually that of Midday Form Lycanroc.
  • Lycanroc and Mr. Mime are the only two Pokémon known to have 6 possible abilities between their forms, the most of any Pokémon.

Origin

Overall Lycanroc shares traits with the extinct Japanese and Hokkaido wolves in particular. Its Rock typing seems to be a reference to the link between wolves (also called as 山犬 yamainu, lit. mountain dog) and mountains in Japan.

Lycanroc's Midday and Dusk Forms appear to be based on a wolf, while its Midnight Form appears to be based on a werewolf. The duality between Midday and Midnight Forms may be a reference to the okuri-inu, a mountain wolf creature that could take either a protective approach, similar to Midday Form's behavior; or an aggressive one much like Midnight Form's.

Name origin

Lycanroc may be a combination of lycanthrope and rock.

Lugarugan may be a combination of rougarouloup-garou (French for werewolf), ガルル garuru (a dog's growling), and 岩 gan (rock).
