Cleffa (Japaneseピィ Py) is a Fairy-type baby Pokémon introduced in Generation II. Prior to Generation VI, it was a Normal-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Clefairy when leveled up with high friendship, which evolves into Clefable when exposed to a Moon Stone.

Biology

Cleffa is a small, pink Pokémon that is vaguely star-shaped in appearance. Its ears are completely brown. Cleffa has two small black eyes, a small mouth, and it appears to have a small, permanent blush on its cheeks. It possesses stubby arms and legs, which have no defined digits and come to a point. It has a curl on its forehead and a curled up tail.

Cleffa lives in mountainous regions, typically found at meteor impact sites. Sightings of Cleffa become more likely during nights illuminated by shooting stars, where they dance the night away; this dance is said to bring good fortune to any who witness it. They quench their thirst the next morning by drinking dew. It is fascinated by anything resembling stars and meteors, such as Minior. Because of this, as well as its own star-shaped silhouette, Cleffa is commonly believed to have arrived on a shooting star. The anime showed that its evolved forms (and therefore Cleffa itself) are actually extraterrestrial Pokémon.

Trophy information

With silhouettes that resemble stars, Cleffa are often sighted when the night sky is filled with shooting stars. NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Stadium 2: Cleffa appears in a quiz-show styled mini-game alongside Igglybuff. A series of Pokémon parade across the screen and players have to count how many of the Pokémon species that have been instructed to be counted parade across the screen. The final score is based on how close the answered amount is to the right number.
  • Pokémon Puzzle Collection Vol. 2: A Cleffa appears during Motion Puzzle mode, taking over the role that Pichu had in the first game.

Trivia

  • Cleffa shares its category with Staryu. They are both known as Star Shape Pokémon.
  • Cleffa is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 218.
  • Cleffa has the shortest Japanese Pokémon name.
  • Cleffa is tied with Igglybuff and Morelull for the lowest base Speed stat of all Fairy-type Pokémon.

Origin

Cleffa seems to be based on fairies and pixies since it is a small, playful, magical creature. It may also be inspired by the concept of extraterrestrial life due to its rumored celestial origins and vaguely star-shaped body. It may also reference the mythical Moon rabbit due to its large ears and the fact that it reaches its final evolved form using a Moon Stone.

Name origin

Cleffa may be a combination of clef (a musical key, referencing its singing ability) and a shortening of fairy.

Py may be a shortening of pixie.
