Mawile (Japaneseクチート Kucheat) is a dual-type Steel/Fairy Pokémon introduced in Generation III. Prior to Generation VI, it was a pure Steel-type Pokémon.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Mawile can Mega Evolve into Mega Mawile using the Mawilite.

Biology

Mawile is a short, bipedal Pokémon with a pale yellow body and black arms and feet. Its legs have a thick, fur-like covering resembling hakama or a skirt. Its most notable feature is a pair of large black jaws emerging from the back of its head. These jaws have an oval yellow spot on their top surface and contain ten pointed teeth - six on the top row and four on the bottom. While the jaws are said to actually be transformed steel horns, Mawile can articulate them at will, using them to bite enemies and chew through iron beams. These jaws are also incapable of tasting and can be used by Mawile to eat food it does not like. It has red eyes and two black ear-like extensions on either side of its head.

Mega Mawile has a second set of jaws protruding from the back of its head, and both sets now have a spiky tuft of hair. It also seems to be able to control each jaw independently of each other.[1] The ear-like extensions on its head are longer and have tips with two points. The fur on its legs is now magenta, and it now has longer fur on its arms with magenta markings around its wrists.

Mawile is typically found in caves. It uses its non-threatening appearance to make foes underestimate it, then attacks with its giant jaws or swallows prey whole; when engaged in battle, Mawile usually has its back turned on the enemy to better use its jaws. Mega Mawile can use both its jaws to grip on prey and tear them apart. These jaws thrash around violently.

Trivia

  • Mawile's footprint is different between the Generation III games (F303gen3.webp) and the Generation IV games (F303.webp).
  • In the 1.0 release of the English version of Pokémon Ruby, Mawile's Pokédex entry incorrectly spells its name twice as MAWHILE, not MAWILE. This typo was corrected in version 1.1.
  • Mawile seems to be the counterpart of Sableye. Both of them are version-exclusive of Ruby and SapphireHeartGold and SoulSilverOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and Sword and Shield. Both also have Mega Evolved forms and the same base stat totals, as well as HP and Speed.
  • Mega Mawile has the highest effective Attack stat of any Pokémon, with a maximum of 678 (105 base Attack plus Huge Power). This is higher than the limit of 669 Attack (255 base Attack, as 255 is the highest possible 8-digit binary number), and would equal a Pokémon with 259 base Attack.
    • Coincidentally, since it gains Huge Power as an Ability when it Mega Evolves, Mega Mawile also has the highest stat total increase of all Mega Evolved Pokémon with the equivalent of 205 points instead of the usual 100.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Mawile

Mawile may have been based on the Japanese legend of the futakuchi-onna, a woman with a mouth in the back of her head. Its mouth resembles a bear-trap, which could have been the origin for its Steel type.

Name origin

Mawile is a combination of maw (the mouth of a voracious animal) and wile (a stratagem or trick intended to deceive or ensnare).

Kucheat is a combination of 口 kuchi (mouth) and cheat or eat.

Oricorio (Japaneseオドリドリ Odoridori) is a Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, Oricorio can change forms by sipping the nectar of certain flowers.

  • If Red Nectar is used on Oricorio, it will change into Baile Style, where it becomes Fire/Flying-type.
  • If Yellow Nectar is used on Oricorio, it will change into Pom-Pom Style, where it becomes Electric/Flying-type.
  • If Pink Nectar is used on Oricorio, it will change into Pa'u Style, where it becomes Psychic/Flying-type.
  • If Purple Nectar is used on Oricorio, it will change into Sensu Style, where it becomes Ghost/Flying-type.

Biology

Oricorio is an avian Pokémon that can change between four markedly different forms. The form it takes on depends on the kind of nectar it consumes. All forms have a light pink beak, thin legs, and dark eyes with white pupils. The feet have three toes in front and one in back, and the beak curves downward.

In its Baile Style, which resides in Ula'ula Island, Oricorio is covered in red feathers with two lines of black feathers across each of its wings and tail. Its plumage resembles a frilly flamenco dress. On the back of its head is a white ball with thin, spiraled extensions on either side that resemble earrings. Its eyelids are purple, and it has a long tail. Baile Style Oricorio is very passionate and exudes power when it dances, and can get fiercely angry if it is given the wrong orders. It throws off downy fluff when it dances that it can ignite to perform a fiery dance attack.[1]

In its Pom-Pom Style, residing in Melemele Island, Oricorio is primarily yellow. Most of its body is pale yellow with a line of longer feathers around its waist like a skirt. Its lower body and short stubby tail are covered with short, white feathers. Fluffy balls of darker yellow feathers cover the end of its wings like pom-poms, and similar, smaller puffs cover its ankles. In the center of its chest is a yellow, v-shaped marking, and there are fan-shaped markings on the sides of its eyes. The markings around its eyes are echoed by three large, pale yellow feathers on each side of its head, which are tipped with bright yellow. Pom-Pom Style Oricorio's dancing charges its feathers with static electricity. While charged, its feathers can be used to attack and unleash electric shocks. It will also use its dancing to cheer up people who are feeling glum, but will also use this as an opening to shock unsuspecting foes.

In its Pa'u Style, residing in Akala Island, Oricorio has pink feathers. Its main body is a dark pink, while most of its other feathers are varying shades of pink. A fan of three feathers tips each wing: two light pink with a whitish-pink on in the center. On the top of its head is an arrangement of feathers resembling a headdress: a ring of fluffy, light pink feathers with larger, paler feathers standing up from the center. There is a larger, similar group of feathers around its waist like a skirt. Pa'u Style Oricorio can be difficult to deal with due to its laid-back nature. It uses its dance to focus its mind and increase its psychic power. The dance is also said to be an offering of thanks to its guardian creature.[2] It gets caught up in dancing that it sometimes ignores its Trainer's orders.

In its Sensu Style, residing in Poni Island, Oricorio's feathers are mainly purple. The tips of its wings broaden into a fan shape, and it has a fan-shaped crest on top of its head. At the base of its crest are four feathers with light blue tips. There are two of these feathers on each side, resembling ornamental hairsticks. On the side of each eye are small, light blue markings that resemble eyelashes. The edges of its wings, fans, head crest, and long tail all have a double border of pale purple with a light blue on the outer edge. Sensu Style Oricorio is a calm and collected Pokémon. Through its dance, it draws in nearby creatures and borrows their power to fight. Its dance reminds people who migrated from Kanto of their homeland.[3]

Oricorio is the only known Pokémon that can learn Revelation Dance, which changes its type according to Oricorio's style.

In the anime

More of them appeared later down on the beach as Team Skull Grunts TuppZipp, and Rapp attempted to use the radishes to lure the Oricorio towards them for capture. They were later freed when the Grunts retreated at Plumeria's orders. The Oricorio reappeared in A Grand Debut!.

Trivia

  • The color for each Oricorio form corresponds to the Hawaiian word from which the name of its home island is derived.
  • When opening up Pokémon Refresh, due to a glitch pertaining to Pokémon with alternate forms, all four forms of Oricorio use Baile Style's cry.
  • Oricorio shares its category with Galarian Mr. Mime. They are both known as the Dancing Pokémon.

Origin

Oricorio may be inspired by Hawaiian honeycreepers, small passerine birds native to Hawaii. Hawaiian honeycreepers feed on the nectar of various plants, but each species favors a specific flower that its beak is adapted to. Oricorio's dancing may also derive from the mating dances of some birds.

Its dancing styles are inspired by different forms of dance. The Baile Style refers to flamenco (baile being a Spanish word for dance), the Pom-Pom Style refers to cheerleading, the Pa'u Style refers to hula (pāʻū being a Hawaiian word for skirt, especially ones that may be used in hula), and the Sensu Style refers to Japanese dance (扇子 sensu being the Japanese word for a folding fan as may be used in such dances). The Sensu style also bears a notable resemblance to a geisha.

Oricorio may also be inspired by Darwin's finches, which also change and adapt to each island whenever they eat the nectar of the resident flowers.

Name origin

Oricorio may be a combination of oriole and choreography. It may also incorporate oratorio.

Odoridori may be a combination of 踊り odori (dance), 鳥 tori (bird), and 色とりどり irotoridori (varicolored).

Tsareena (Japaneseアマージョ Amajo) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Steenee when leveled up while knowing Stomp. It is the final form of Bounsweet.

Biology

Tsareena is a bipedal, plantlike Pokémon with a humanoid appearance. Its torso, arms, and legs are dark purple, while its hips and head are white. It has heavy-lidded, dark purple eyes with purple eyelids and long purple eyelashes, but has no visible mouth or nose. The lower part of its face is hidden behind a short ruff extending up from its body. While its arms are slender with rounded, digit-less hands, its legs are long and powerful. The upper portions of its legs have three pointed projections just before the hips, composing the impression of long boots. The lower portions of its legs taper into small, pointed feet. It has wide hips made up of six segments that resemble the flesh of a mangosteen.

On top of Tsareena's head is a light green calyx. The shortest leaf of the calyx extends slightly forward and then curves to the right, similar to side-swept bangs. The other three leaves resemble long hair and extend nearly to the ground. The three long leaves each have three yellow spots near the top and three near the bottom; the markings are present on both the under and upper sides of the leaves. On top of the calyx is a growth resembling a small, purple crown with four thin yellow stripes.

This Pokémon has a high-class nature and punishes anyone that approaches it with evil in mind. This attitude will even be directed at its Trainer if given commands Tsareena dislikes, such as being told to use an ineffective move. Touching the crown-like growth on its head is said to render it defenseless, however.[1]

Tsareena fights using finely honed kicks and graceful movements, such as its signature moveTrop Kick. Every time it lands a hit, it cackles at its opponent. It will even continue kicking or stepping on a downed opponent, laughing boisterously. Additionally, its sweet fragrance acts as a distraction. Because only the most powerful Steenee evolve into Tsareena, this Pokémon uses its power to protect its pre-evolved forms.

Trivia

  • Tsareena and its pre-evolved forms share their category with Tropius. They are all known as the Fruit Pokémon.

Origin

Tsareena appears to be based on a mangosteen and a female monarch, such as a queen. It may also be a reference to the mangosteen being known as the "Queen of Fruit".

Name origin

Tsareena may be a combination of tsarina, a Russian female monarch, and mangosteen. It may also incorporate queen and serene.

Amajo may be a combination of 甘い amai (sweet) and 女王 joō (queen). Given the combination of Tsareena's appearance giving it the impression of wearing long boots, and that its moveset includes moves such as PunishmentStomp, and Power Whip, the 女王 joō part of this name may also be an allusion to its use in Japanese as a slang term for a dominatrix.
