Suicune (Japanese: スイクン Suicune) is a Water-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Along with Raikou and Entei, it is one of the Legendary beasts called by Ho-Oh after the burning of the Brass Tower. Of the three Legendary beasts, Suicune is said to represent the rains that quenched the flames of the burning Brass Tower.

Suicune is the game mascot of Pokémon Crystal, appearing on the boxart.

Suicune is pursued in the animemangaPokémon Crystal, and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver by Eusine.

Biology

Suicune is a slim, quadrupedal, blue, mammalian Pokémon with white, diamond-shaped markings. Its face and underside are white as well. Suicune has a thick, purple mane that resembles the aurora borealis and two white, streamer-like tails that wave forward. It has a long, white snout. Suicune has a large, hexagonal, cerulean blue crest on its forehead with two prongs on either side of the base. It has red eyes, a small tuft of fur under its chin, and small paws with white paw pads.

Suicune has the power to walk across water and purify dirty water with one touch. It travels across grasslands in search of water to purify by following the north wind. Northern winds always seem to blow stronger in its presence. In Pokémon Crystal, Suicune is said to be the closest of the Legendary beasts to Ho-Oh. It is also said to have a link to the UnownIn the anime, Suicune is heroic, serious, and calm during dangerous situations. Suicune is believed to be both the embodiment of the north winds and compassion of pure spring waters.

Suicune (recurring)

Suicune made its debut in Don't Touch That 'dile, where Ash and his friends first encountered one as they were heading towards New Bark Town. Suicune was seen standing on a small island in a lake, appearing as a mysterious silhouette of blue energy. At first, Ash did not understand what Pokémon it was and wanted to catch it. However, Suicune leaped into the fog and vanished as soon as Ash made an attempt to battle it.

The same Suicune reappeared in For Ho-Oh the Bells Toll!. After Team Rocket had removed the Crystal Bells from Ecruteak's Tin Tower, many Bug-type Pokémon invaded the city. They wrapped JessieJames and Meowth in a String Shot and blocked off the entry to the Tin Tower. Suicune appeared in a mystical blue light and calmed the wild Pokémon down. Seeing the Legendary PokémonJessie had Arbok launch a Poison Sting, but Suicune evaded the attack and sent Team Rocket blasting off with an Aurora Beam.

Eusine wanted to catch Suicune and sent out his Alakazam to battle it. Alakazam used Disable, but Suicune easily blocked it with a Mirror Coat. It then used Roar to send Alakazam back into its Poké Ball and fled from the area before Eusine could even react. The brief encounter led Eusine to pursue Suicune, in the hopes of seeing it again one day.

Its known moves are Aurora BeamMirror Coat, and Roar.

Suicune (M04)

In Celebi: The Voice of the Forest, a Suicune participated in the battle against Dark Celebi. It also demonstrated its ability to purify water.

Suicune first appeared as a beam of light in Slugging It Out With Slugma. Its first proper appearance was in Querulous Qwilfish. It was revealed in Hello, Lickitung that Yellow had unintentionally freed the Legendary beasts from their imprisonment at the Burned Tower, from which they then left to roam Johto and Kanto in search for a Trainer to team up with in the battle against the Masked Man. Despite both Eusine and Crystal pursuing Suicune and attempting to catch it, Suicune eventually chose Misty as its Trainer after battling her at Tohjo Falls. After the Masked Man was defeated, Suicune returned to the wild.

Main article: Suicune (Pokkén Tournament)

Suicune is a Standard-type playable character in Pokkén. Moves it can use include Aurora BeamHydro PumpMirror Coat, and Blizzard. In Burst Form, it can use the Burst Attack True Sheer Cold.

Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl/3DS/Wii U/Ultimate

When released from a Poké Ball, Suicune unleashes a blast of Blizzard that causes high levels of damage. Suicune returns in Brawl but with a different attackAurora Beam.

Suicune reappears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, functioning the same as in Brawl. In these games, it can also be summoned from a Master Ball.

Suicune reappears again in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, functioning the same as in previous games. In this game, it can also be summoned from a Master Ball.

Melee trophy information

This mystical aurora Pokémon constantly journeys in search of places with pure flowing water. Suicune wields the power to instantly purify any contaminated water it finds. Some say Suicune is the north wind reborn. Its strange and dramatic story is told over the course of the Crystal version of the Pokémon game.

Brawl trophy information

"An Aurora Pokémon. It has the power to instantly purify even the filthiest water. Suicune is said to be the character of the northern wind, so when it shows up, so does that wind. Suicune uses the move Aurora Beam--aurora light focused into a powerful beam. Along with inflicting damage, this attack also lowers the target's attack power."

3DS/Wii U trophy information

Suicune trophy in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

NAA Legendary Pokémon that emerged from the ashes of the Burned Tower, Suicune is a Water-type Pokémon easily identified by its long, purple mane. In battle, it'll head toward a nearby fighter and fire an Aurora Beam all the way to the edge of the screen. If you get hit, you'll be frozen solid!

PALSuicune is one of the Legendary Pokémon from the Burned Tower in Ecruteak City. Its mane is said to resemble an aurora floating over it. If summoned in battle, it'll make its way straight for a nearby fighter and unleash its Aurora Beam. The target, frozen in place, is unable to resist as it's blown off the stage.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Suicune appears as a Spirit alongside Entei and Raikou.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Crystal: It is possible to see Suicune multiple times on the overworld (specifically in Cianwood City, outside Mt. Mortar on Route 42, and on Route 36 just beside the gate to National Park) before the actual battle in Bell Tower. In these occasions, it will always hop away on being spotted.
  • Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver: As in Crystal, Suicune will roam Johto and Kanto before finally battling the player. After being first seen in the Burned Tower, it runs to Cianwood CityRoute 42Vermilion Harbor, and Route 14 before becoming battleable at the end of Route 25 after defeating Misty. If it is not caught, Suicune can be found in the Burned Tower after entering the Hall of Fame again.
  • Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon: Suicune first appears alongside Raikou up on Revelation Mountain where they confronted Krookodile believing he turned Entei to stone but discovered Nuzleaf was responsible and was turned to stone. Suicune later helped the player and partner escape from the Voidlands.

Trivia

  • Suicune, along with Raikou and Entei, was designed by Muneo Saitō.[1]
  • Suicune's number in the National Pokédex and the Johto Pokédex are the same: 245.
  • Suicune is the only member of a Legendary trio to also be a game mascot while its fellow members are not.
  • Suicune is the only Shadow Pokémon that can have a varying moveset. Normally knowing Surf if snagged in The Under or Realgam Tower, Suicune instead knows Hydro Pump if it is snagged in Deep Colosseum.

Origin

When asked if Suicune was based on any particular animal, Muneo Saitō described Suicune's made up process to come together easily and fell into a motif that felt "leopard-like".[2][3] This motif may have been a homage from Fūjin, the Shinto fake character of the North Wind, who wears leopard skin. Suicune's mane also looks similar to the northern aurora. Suicune's build, crest, and ability to walk on water bear similarities to the Qilin.

Name origin
