Arcanine (Japaneseウインディ Windie) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It evolves from Growlithe when exposed to a Fire Stone.

Biology

Arcanine is a quadrupedal, canine Pokémon with an orange pelt marked by jagged black stripes. It has diamond-shaped ears with beige insides, black eyes, a round, black nose, and two pointed teeth protruding from its upper jaw. Its head, muzzle, and chest are covered in shaggy, beige fur, except for two oval sections around each eye and ear. Long tufts of fur grow behind its elbows and around its ankles. Its underside is black, and it has a billowing, beige tail that is bent in the middle. Each paw has three toes and a round, pink pad.

Arcanine is a fiercely brave and loyal Pokémon. It is capable of running 6,200 miles (10,000 kilometers) in 24 hours with a speed and grace reminiscent of flight. Additionally, the move Extreme Speed was its signature move in the past. Arcanine has long been admired for its beauty and speed, and anyone who hears its bark will grovel before it. The source of its power is a flame blazing wildly inside its body. Being the result of an evolution via Evolution stone, Arcanine is rarely found in the wild, but when found, it is usually seen living in prairies, and Pokémon Snap has also shown it living in active volcanoes. In the anime, it was shown that it stashes food in its mane and carries it to its nest for its young.

Trivia

Engravings of "Legendary Pokémon" MoltresArticunoZapdos, and Arcanine in Pokémon Emergency!
  • In the Pokémon Red and Blue beta, Arcanine was originally known as Blaze.
  • Despite the Pokémon category name, Arcanine is not an actual Legendary Pokémon. It is the only Pokémon species to have "Legendary Pokémon" as the Pokémon category.
    • However, Arcanine was seen in an engraving along with Legendary birds MoltresArticuno, and Zapdos in Pokémon Emergency!.
  • Many of Arcanine's Pokédex entries—starting with the one in the Japanese Pokémon Redreference the real world, specifically China.
  • Arcanine and its pre-evolved form are the only Pokémon with a male-female ratio of 3:1 that aren't in the Human-Like Egg Group.

Origin

Arcanine may be based on the Ryukyuan シーサー shisa, or 狛犬 komainu, mythical creatures that resemble a mix between lions and dogs. Statues of them in pairs are used as guardians that invite good characters and repel evil ones. Its stripes and coloration are reminiscent of tigers. It could also be based on the Xiezhi, a mythical fire-eating dog with similarities to lions and tigers. It may also draw inspiration from dogs with brindle ("tiger-striped") coat patterns, such as the 甲斐犬 Kai Ken.

Name origin

Arcanine may be a combination of arcane and canine. It may also derive from arson, given its Fire-typing.

Windie may refer to wind or windy, reflecting its defining nature of being fast like the wind, further emphasized by Extreme Speed being its signature move in Generation II.

Giratina (Japaneseギラティナ Giratina) is a dual-type Ghost/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

While it is not known to evolve to or from any other Pokémon, Giratina has a second forme activated by giving Giratina a Griseous Orb to hold, or while it is in its home, the Distortion Region. Its original forme, Altered Forme, will then become Origin Forme.

Giratina's Origin Forme was officially revealed in early February 2008.

Giratina is the game mascot of Pokémon Platinum, appearing on the boxart in its Origin Forme.

Along with Dialga and Palkia, it is a member of the taming trio of Sinnoh, representing antimatter.

Biology

Giratina is a large, gray, draconic Pokémon with three gold half-rings on each side of its long neck. Its head has a gold crown-like object surrounding it with two large horns pointing sideways. A thick black stripe runs vertically along its front with five red horizontal stripes. In its Altered Forme, it has two large black ghostly wings with three red tips on each that can resemble claws. These wings can change shape as if made of a liquid or gas. Its six legs are thick and have golden claws. Two golden half-circles similar to those on its neck are on each side of each leg, resembling shackles. It has a tail. Giratina remains in Altered Forme when outside of its home region.

In its Origin Forme, it takes on a serpentine look. Its legs are reduced to golden-tipped spikes, and four additional golden spikes appear near the edge of its tail. While in Origin Forme, the six gold half-rings can grip objects. The back points of each half-ring have a black ghostly tendril with red a spike at its tip. The horns on its head are now facing the back. The sides of the golden "crown" cover its mouth and separate vertically like an insect's mandible when it opens its mouth. The black vertical stripe is broken into pieces and runs all the way down its body. Giratina can only be in its Origin Forme when in its home, the Distortion region, or when holding a Griseous Orb.

Giratina is able to travel through and control regions. When in its Origin Forme, it is able to pass through regions at will, however, it will turn back to its Altered Forme due to the gravity change from the Distortion region. Giratina is a highly aggressive and territorial Pokémon that is protective of its home. Legends claim that Giratina appears in cemeteries. Giratina has also been reported to appear in ancient cemeteries. Giratina was said to be banished for its supposedly violent behavior, though in the anime it is shown to possess a gentle side as well. Giratina is said to have observed the main region silently while in its own home region. Giratina is the only known Pokémon that can learn Shadow Force.

Notes:
  • If Foresight or Odor Sleuth is used by an opponent or the opponent has Scrappy, the effectiveness of  Normal-type  moves is 1× and the effectiveness of  Fighting-type  moves is 1×.
  • If Gravity is in effect, this Pokémon is affected by Smack Down or Ingrain, the opponent has the Ability Mold BreakerTurboblaze or Teravolt, or this Pokémon is affected by Gastro Acid, or this Pokémon's Ability is replaced, the effectiveness of  Ground-type  moves is 1×.
  • In Generation IV only, when Giratina is in its Origin Forme due to holding the Griseous Orb, it cannot have its Ability changed by any means (such as Skill Swap or Worry Seed). Giratina's Ability can still be copied (by Trace or Role Play) or suppressed by Gastro Acid. This effect is unrelated with the Ability itself. Giratina can still have its Ability changed when it is in Altered Forme.

Trivia

Origin Forme Giratina in the Distortion Region in Pokémon Platinum

Altered Forme Giratina at Turnback Cave in Pokémon Platinum
  • Origin Forme Giratina is the tallest Generation IV Pokémon.
  • Giratina has many differences from the other members of its trio:
    • It is the only member with form differences.
    • It is the only member without any double resistances.
    • Its HP is its highest stat rather than Special Attack.
    • It does not have a timespace orb in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (the Griseous Orb is introduced in Pokémon Platinum).
    • It is met at level 70 in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl while the other members are met at level 47. This is reversed in Pokémon Platinum.
    • It is separated from the other members of its group in the Pokédex by Heatran and Regigigas.
    • It is the only member without a 100% recruit rate in the Mystery Dungeon series.
  • Giratina is tied with LunalaDawn Wings Necrozma, and Shadow Rider Calyrex for the highest base stat total of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
    • Giratina is tied with Drifblim for the highest base HP stat of all Ghost-type Pokémon.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, Giratina is the only Pokémon to come out from above the screen during the start of the battle.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, when battled in the Distortion Region it does not have a shadow until it uses Shadow Force or breaks out of a Poké Ball.
  • Giratina is the only Legendary Pokémon that can be obtained in all five of the Generation IV core series handheld games.
  • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the second frame of Giratina's Altered Forme sprite was changed, but the static sprite remained the same.
    • This sprite is also present in Pokémon Platinum's data but is unused.
  • In Pokémon Platinum, when encountered in the Distortion Region the unique message "The Distortion Region's Giratina appeared" is displayed. However, it is still a wild Pokémon.
  • In Black 2 and White 2, in the The Battle Between Legendary PokémonFantina has an Origin Forme Giratina without a Griseous Orb.
  • Altered Forme Giratina is the heaviest Ghost-type Pokémon.
    • Origin Forme Giratina is the tallest Ghost-type Pokémon.

Origin

Furthermore, both of Giratina's Forms resemble the Beasts of Revelation, with its Altered Form standing for the "Earth Beast", and its Origin Form standing for the "Sea Beast".

Giratina may also be based on Seta, a giant centipede, from the Japanese fake fairy-tale, "My Lord Bag of Rice", which was said to prey on dragon hatchlings and be as large as a mountain.

In its Altered Forme, Giratina's wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-like, six-legged feature, but its posture is similar to a sauropod.

Its Origin Forme has a body similar to the a serpentine body (due to saraph meaning snake or serpent in Islamic languages). Additionally, "Seraphim" alternatively translates to "[the] burning one", which could have been one of the inspirations for Giratina's destructive nature. The exact design of its six wings may be based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs. This Forme also shares physical traits with the Amphiptere, a European dragon-like creature with wings but no legs.

ts Ghost-type may have been chosen to represent this, being the type of metaphysical and "otherworldly" substances and beings. Additionally, it parallels its counterparts' types; Dialga is part Steel-type, and Palkia is part Water-type - all three reference the three primary states of matter; solid, liquid, and gas.

Name origin

Giratina may be a combination of girasol (a type of red opal), guillotine, or girare (Italian for to wander/turn around); and platina and プラチナ purachina (Japanese for platinum).
