Moltres (Japaneseファイヤー Fire) is a dual-type Fire/Flying Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation I.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

In Galar, Moltres has a dual-type Dark/Flying regional form that was introduced in The Crown Tundra expansion of the Pokémon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass.

Along with Articuno and Zapdos, it is one of the three Legendary birds of Kanto.

Biology

A Moltres feather

Moltres is a large, avian Pokémon with golden plumage. It has a long, flowing head crest and a billowing tail, both made of reddish-orange and yellow flames. Additionally, its wings are also shrouded in fiery plumage. When using its the wings, they gain a dazzling red glow. It has a long, thin neck, a pointed, brown beak, and small, triangular eyes. Its thin, brown legs have feet that have three forward-facing toes and one backward-facing toe. It has short talons.

Moltres sheds embers with every flap of its wings, composing a brilliant flash of flames. By dipping itself into the magma of an active volcano, this Pokémon can heal itself. It migrates to the south with the coming of spring and is said to bring an early springtime to cold lands. There have been stories of Moltres using its wings to assist those lost in the mountains. Moltres is rarely seen. In the past, Sky Attack was its signature move.

In Galar, Moltres has a similar build, but a drastically different color scheme. Its body is primarily black with scarlet highlights and bright blue eyes. Its scarlet beak is hooked at the tip and leads to markings that run down its front and behind its head. Its feet are also scarlet with black talons. Its wings, crest, and tail are mostly black, with the crest having an extra curl at the front and the tail being split in two, and all three of these features exude a magenta, flame-like energy that earns it the name of its Kantonian counterpart.

The sinister energy that blazes from within its body is so oppressive that most Pokémon can't even approach it. Galarian Moltres attacks by spreading its wings wide to unleash its energy in a powerful aura that attacks the minds of its foes, inflicting deep fatigue as it burns away their energy from within. The aura has the power to consume the spirit of its victims, reducing them to burned-out shadows of themselves. It is said to have a haughty personality and a calm demeanor. It appears in the Crown Tundra once every few decades to reach Dyna Tree Hill.[1]

Galarian Moltres is the only Pokémon that can learn the move Fiery Wrath.

Trophy information

Melee

As tradition has it, the onset of spring heralds the return of this legendary Pokémon from its southern home. Its bright orange color and fiery aspect lends to its overwhelming appearance. Sky Attack, the strongest of flying moves, is a perfect fit for this burning phenom, but it obviously also excels at powerful Fire-type moves.

Brawl

"A Flame Pokémon. It's one of the legendary bird Pokémon. When Moltres appears in a town, it is said that spring will come earlier there than in other towns. If Moltres is injured, it apparently returns to a volcano to heal its wings with magma. Moltres spreads its wide, flame-covered wings and attacks opponents with the exciting and highly damaging Sky Attack."

NAThis Fire/Flying-type Pokémon is one of three Legendary birds in the Kanto region. It will use Fly when called into a Smash Bros. battle, flapping its orange wings and sending fire out around it. Getting hit hurts and could launch you so far, you'd make Moltres jealous. That isn't a good thing...

PALMoltres is one of the three Legendary Bird Pokémon of the Kanto region, along with Articuno and Zapdos. When spreading its huge wings and taking flight, it can make the flames all over its body burn even brighter. If you get hit by those flames during its Fly attack, you might go flying even further than Moltres!

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Moltres returns as a Pokémon summoned from the Poké Ball, retaining its behavior from past games. It also appears as a Spirit alongside Articuno and Zapdos.

Trivia

  • Kantonian Moltres shares its category with CharmeleonCharizardFlareon, and Infernape. They are all known as the Flame Pokémon.
  • Moltres, alongside the other two Legendary birds, had an Australian Beetle named after it, named Binburrum moltres.
  • Peony describes Galarian Moltres as "...barely lukewarm!" This comment is likely there to explain how it is no longer a Fire-type.

Origin

Moltres seems to be based on the legends of firebirds such as the phoenix, the Slavic firebird, or the Bennu. It may also be based on the Japanese mythical bird known as 朱雀 Suzaku, guardian of the South, which is not a true phoenix. In addition, it may be based on a heron because of their similarities in body shape.

Galarian Moltres appears to resemble a cormorant.

Name origin

Moltres is a combination of molten and tres (Spanish for three, indicating that it is the third in the trio of Kanto Legendary birds). It may also derive from molt.

Fire is literally fire.

Ho-Oh (Japaneseホウオウ Houou) is a dual-type Fire/Flying Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

It is often considered to be closely related to Lugia as a duo, even sometimes as its polar opposite. Silver represents Lugia as "guardian of the seas", and Gold represents Ho-Oh as "guardian of the skies". Ho-Oh is also the trio master of the Legendary beasts.

Ho-Oh is the game mascot of Pokémon Gold and its remake Pokémon HeartGold, appearing on the boxart of both. It was also the first Generation II Pokémon revealed, in August 1996.

Biology

Ho-Oh is an avian Pokémon resembling a phoenix and a peacock. Its feathers are predominantly gold and red, with yellow tail-feathers, a white underside, and green feathers at the tip of its wings. Ho-Oh has a green stripe on its neck, a yellow beak, black rings around its red eyes, and a feathered, yellow crest on its head. Ho-Oh's wings are prismatic, causing it to trail a rainbow behind it. It has darkly colored feet and legs with four toes and long talons.

Ho-Oh has a technical power to heal the sick. Ho-Oh was the only known Pokémon to learn Sacred Fire, its former signature move. It is said that when it flies its huge wings create bright, colorful rainbows. The rare few who bear witness to Ho-Oh are promised lifelong happiness. Ho-Oh used to perch at the top of the various towers located across the Johto region: the Bell Tower until the Brass Tower was destroyed by fire and the Goldenrod Tower in ancient times. It now presumably flies through the world's skies in search of a Trainer with a pure heart.

Main series

Ho-Oh in the anime

According to the anime, Ho-Oh lived in the Tin Tower in ancient times. When a war broke out, burning both the Tin Tower and the Brass Tower down, it created RaikouEntei, and Suicune, and all four disappeared. Later, a new Tin Tower was erected, but Ho-Oh since then has never come back for sure. A great flame from Ho-Oh burns in the Ho-Oh Shrine at Mt. Silver; it was obtained during the same war.

Major appearances

Ho-Oh (anime)

On occasion, Ho-Oh would only be seen by Ash, and always fleetingly. This trend began at the end of Pokémon - I Choose You!, where Ash saw it flying alongside a rainbow across the sky after the thunderstorm. In I Choose You!, which is set in a continuity different from the main series, Ho-Oh played a major role.

Minor appearances

Ho-Oh was seen at the end of Battling the Enemy Within!.

A Ho-Oh appeared in the opening sequence of Jirachi: Wish Maker.

In Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, a Ho-Oh appeared in the intro, and then as a transformation of Mew.

In the opening sequence of The Rise of Darkrai, a Ho-Oh was flying through space.

A Ho-Oh appeared in the opening sequence of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.

A Ho-Oh appeared in the opening sequence of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

In Pokémon Adventures, Ho-Oh first appeared as a silhouette in Just a Spearow Carrier. It appeared again as a silhouette in Hitmonlee, Baby! (One More Time), when Green was explaining to Bill that she believes the Elite Four were the ones who controlled it to capture her. It was used by the Masked Man to kidnap children showing remarkable talent in his scheme to capture Celebi, including Green and Silver, six years prior to the start of the entire manga.

Prior to the events of the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter, Pryce had lost control over Ho-Oh, and thus attacked the Tin Tower using Team Rocket to prompt Ho-Oh to return to Ecruteak City. Ho-Oh was later seen at Indigo Plateau under Pryce's control, alongside Lugia, wreaking havoc and destruction. It was then lent to Karen and Will to fight Green with alongside Lugia, and nearly defeated her Legendary birds, but both of them were eventually brought back to their senses and freed.

Ho-Oh in Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl

When released from a Poké Ball, Ho-Oh unleashes a spiral of Sacred Fire that deals massive amounts of damage to any opponent caught in it. However, it appears very rarely.

Melee trophy information

As it soars around the skies of the world, this Rainbow Pokemon leaves a trail of rainbows and fake histories in its wake. Its signature move is called Sacred Fire, and it is believed to appear only before trainers who are pure of heart. If you see a trainer with Ho-oh, you can assume that catching it took a lot of work.

Brawl trophy information

"A Rainbow Pokémon. On sparkling wings of seven colors, Ho-Oh leaves a rainbow behind as it flies. Legend says that Ho-Oh suppressed a war that scorched the land in ancient times. Its attack Sacred Fire can melt ice in an instant and also damage the target with burns. Ho-Oh will show its solemn figure only for the most righteous Trainers."

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ho-Oh returns as an occasional stage hazard in the Blazing Chamber of the Kalos Pokémon League stage. Rarely appearing, it makes the flames supporting the platforms flare up with higher intensity, likely KOing any characters unfortunate enough to be on the platforms at the time.

Trophy Information

This Pokémon flies through the skies, trailing rainbows from its wings, and is said to promise eternal happiness to all who see it. Supposedly, it appears every once in a while in the Fire-type Elite Four Trainer's room in the Kalos Pokémon League stage. Its screams cause pillars of fire to rise all the way to the ceiling.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Ho-Oh appears as a Spirit.
