Flygon (Japaneseフライゴン Flygon) is a dual-type Ground/Dragon Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Vibrava starting at level 45. It is the final form of Trapinch.

Biology

Flygon is a Pokémon that resembles a slightly insectoid, bipedal dragon. It is primarily light green and has a pair of large rhombus-shaped wings with red trim, toeless hind legs, and skinny arms with three-clawed hands. Flygon's tail has several dark green stripes and three small green rhombus shapes with red trims at the end. It has large eyes and a pair of green antennae that point back. Its eyes have red covers that prevent sand from getting into it. With its wings, it kicks up sandstorms to hide itself. Its wings make a "singing" sound when they are flapped, earning Flygon the name "The Desert Creature". It uses this unique ability to attract prey, stranding them before it attacks. Flygon lives in the desert, and it typically works together with Krookodile in searching for food.

Trivia

  • Flygon shares its categories with Xatu. They are both known as the Mystic Pokémon in English and the Creature Pokémon in Japanese.
  • Flygon has the same base Attack stat as its base form Trapinch.
    • Despite this, each of Flygon's base stats are exactly 30 points greater than those of its pre-evolved form.
  • Flygon's effort value yield of 1 Attack and 2 Speed is unique.
  • According to Ken Sugimori in his interview in the Nintendo Dream magazine, Flygon was intended to get a Mega Evolution in Pokémon X and Y, but the idea was later dropped due to him experiencing an artist's block.
  • As of Generation VIII, Flygon and its evolutionary relatives are the only Pokémon that are in the Bug and Dragon Egg Groups.

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:
On the Origin of Species: Trapinch, Vibrava and Flygon

Flygon appears to be based on the winged, adult stage of the antlion. Oftentimes, the adult antlion and dragonfly are confused with one another, and Flygon could draw inspiration from both. In fact, some species of dragonflies are commonly called "sand dragons", which could account for Vibrava and Flygon's type combination. In keeping with its Dragon type, it also possesses a dragon-like build and reptilian features such as its arms and tail. Its goggle-like lenses hiding a small eye could be inspired by mantids and similar insects, which have large compound eyes with pseudopupils - commonly mistaken for a true pupil.

Name origin

Flygon may be a combination of fly (which could either refer to the fly insect or the act of flying), and dragon. It may also be a partial anagram of dragonfly.

Lucario (Japaneseルカリオ Lucario) is a dual-type Fighting/Steel Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Riolu when leveled up with high friendship during the day.

Lucario can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario using the Lucarionite.

Biology

Lucario is a bipedal, canine-like Pokémon with predominantly blue and black fur. It possesses a short, round spike on the back of each forepaw, in addition to a third on its chest. It has red eyes, a long snout, and ears. When its mouth is open, two pairs of pointed teeth, one in the upper jaw and one in the lower, can be seen. It possesses cream-colored fur on its torso and blue fur on its thighs that resemble shorts. It has a medium-length tail of the same blue color as well. It stands on its toes rather than on its entire foot. It has developed four black appendages that hang down from its head, which rise when Lucario reads or manipulates aura, a special energy that it senses. Lucario can study this energy to predict the movements of its opponents and track their quarry. It also has the power to manipulate this energy in an offensive manner, in the form of explosive spheres of energy. Lucario can understand human speech and has been reported to communicate with humans through telepathy.

As Mega Lucario, its cream fur becomes longer, and its thighs slim down. It develops more spikes on the back of its paws, which have turned crimson. It also develops spikes on both of its feet, which have become crimson too. Its previously red eyes are now orange-colored. Its aura-sensing appendages grow longer, and two of them are tipped in crimson. Its shoulders also possess a spike each. Its aura heightens throughout its body, which formed black markings on its blue fur.[1] In Kalos, Mega Lucario is believed to be the first discovered Mega Evolution. People call Mega Lucario's fighting style heartless due to it being bathed in the explosive energy of Mega Evolution, awakening its combative instincts and causing it to not show any mercy to any of its opponents.

Lucario is considered to be prideful and is extremely loyal to its Trainer. It also seems to have a natural sense of justice. It usually lives deep in mountains very far from people to improve their skills. It is an exceptionally rare Pokémon. Lucario are primarily carnivores, hunting their prey in packs, though one Lucario was seen eating Berries and plants like roses. It has also been seen eating chocolate, even though chocolate is not part of its natural diet.

Sun Not only does it perceive auras, but it has also gained the power to control them. It employs them in battle.
Moon They can detect the species of a living being—and its emotions—from over half a mile away. They control auras and hunt their prey in packs.
Ultra Sun It concentrates its mental energy and fires off mysterious waves called auras, which can crush boulders of large size to dust.
Ultra Moon Lucario reads its opponent's feelings with its aura waves. It finds out things it would rather not know, so it gets stressed out easily.
Mega Lucario
Sun Black streaks all over its body show where its auras and the energy of Mega Evolution intermingled and raced through it.
Moon It readies itself to face its enemies by focusing its mental energies. Its fighting style can be summed up in a single word: heartless.
Ultra Sun Its aura has expanded due to Mega Evolution. Governed only by its combative instincts, it strikes enemies without mercy.
Ultra Moon Bathed in explosive energy, its combative instincts have awakened. For its enemies, it has no mercy whatsoever.

Sword It controls waves known as auras, which are powerful enough to pulverize huge rocks. It uses these waves to take down its prey.
Shield It can tell what people are thinking. Only Trainers who have justice in their hearts can earn this Pokémon's trust.

  • Due to Lucario's combination of Abilities, in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky Steadfast only activates if Lucario becomes cross-eyed, or if the opponent has Mold Breaker.
  • Lucario has the fewest moves of all the Pokkén Tournament fighters, with a total of four.
  • Mega Lucario has the highest Special Attack stat of all non-legendary Fighting-type Pokémon.
  • In the Pokémon of the Year poll held by The Pokémon Company in 2020, Lucario was voted the most popular Generation IV Pokémon, receiving 102,259 votes. It was also the second-most popular Pokémon overall.

Origin

Lucario appears to be similar to the Egyptian fake creature of funerals and the dead, Anubis, who has the head of an African golden wolf. Anubis's role in Egyptian fake history was to judge the hearts of deceased souls based on their actions during their life. This resembles Lucario's ability to see a life form's aura. It also seems to be based on an Egyptian boxer. Boxing is a sport that is believed to have origins in Egypt.

The markings on Lucario's face resemble a mask. The rings around its shoulders may be inspired by iron rings used in martial arts. The four appendages on Lucario's head, together with the shape drawn by its mask (a bisected ring), may suggest inspiration from a khakkhara, which in popular depictions can respond to spiritual energies similarly to how Lucario's appendages act when it senses aura.

Name origin

Lucario may be derived from the reverse of the Japanese transliteration of orichalcum (a mythical metal) or oracle (referring to its supernatural abilities involving aura). It may also involve lupaster (a subspecies of the Canis aureus), Cairopharaohlykos (Greek for wolf), luchar (Spanish for to fight), or lucarius (Latin for (one) of light or luminary).

Weavile (Japaneseマニューラ Manyula) is a dual-type Dark/Ice Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Sneasel when leveled up holding a Razor Claw during the night.

Biology

Weavile is a bipedal, weasel-like Pokémon with a pale, gray body. It has a bright red crown and collar made of wide feathers and a single, thinner feather on each ear. The ear feathers are smaller on a female Weavile. Weavile has two tail feathers and three claws on each paw. There is a yellow, oval marking in the center of its forehead. Its eyes are red with three eyelashes, and four fangs protrude from its upper jaw.

Weavile live in snow covered areas and are notorious predators. Weavile is famed for its speed and agility. A scratch from Weavile's sharp claws can leave behind traces of frostbite. Weavile often hunt in packs for prey such as Alolan Sandshrew, Alolan Vulpix, and even larger species like Mamoswine, then divide up the prey amongst themselves. Weavile can communicate by carving patterns into trees, ice, and boulders, with over 500 distinct signs recorded.

Trivia

  • Weavile weighs as much as Dawn. It shares this similarity with Porygon-Z.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Weavile and its pre-evolved form.
  • Weavile can be seen as a parallel to Gliscor. Both were introduced in Generation IV, both of them are dual-types, have the same base stat total, have double weaknesses (Gliscor to Ice, Weavile to Fighting), evolve from Pokémon that were introduced in Generation II, and do so by leveling up at night while holding items that contain the word "razor" (Sneasel evolves with Razor Claw, whereas Gligar evolves with Razor Fang).

Origin

Weavile may be based on the kamaitachi, a type of yōkai often represented as weasel creatures with sickles on their front legs and sometimes understood as the cause of mysterious cuts on the skin, especially in cold weather. It also shares some traits with cats and weasels. Its appearance may be based on ancient Egyptian fashion, as it includes what resembles a headdress, collar, and earrings similar to what Egyptian fake characters wear. Its "eyeshadow" also resembles Egyptian makeup.

Name origin

Weavile may be a combination of weaselweaveevil, and vile.

Manyula is a combination of 魔 ma (creature), 潜入 sennyū (sneaking in), and 鼬  (weasel, an alternate reading of itachi). Nyu itself may be a combination of ニャー nya (the sound a cat makes) and 鼬 .
